Southern Tasmania

The Southern Region hosts Tasmania’s capital city and most of the population is concentrated around Hobart and in the eastern third of the region.

The South West of Tasmania is mostly inaccessible wilderness, although for adventurous travellers could head to Strathgordon and Lake Pedder.

Hobart is the largest city in Tasmania and the second oldest in Australia.  There are still many original buildings dating back to the very early 1800s, most of them built by convict labour.

Salamance Place, on the waterfront, has rows of sandstone warehouses that have been converted to bars, restaurants and art galleries, and a famous market on Saturday mornings.

MONA, the Museum Of Old and New Art is a major drawcard for the region bringing visitors from all over the world.  Even if you don’t love some of the confronting art works, you will be amazed at the unique construction of the museum.

You will find an abundance of options for day rides in the South from the Huon Valley, to Port Arthur on the Tasman Peninsula, Bruny Island and Richmond and beyond.
